Roman Blinds - How to measure

Assuming your window is reasonably straight, measuring is quite straightforward and allows you to give us enough information to provide you with a quotation.

Stand back and look at your window. The two main options are whether you want the blind to sit inside the window recess, or outside. You may have traditional or period windows which give you an architrave you’d like to see.

The measurements we need are the length in cm and the width in cm.

If you’re measuring outside the recess:

  • For length - You should measure from the top down, so where you want the blind to start (could be at ceiling height, or as little as 5cm above the recess) down to where you would like the blind to finish (this could be a windowsill, or enough to drop behind a piece of furniture)

  • For width - measure the recess and add approximately 4cm each side on, alternatives are within decorative architrave or the width of the sill

If you’re measuring inside the recess:

  • For length - measure both sides top to bottom to ensure they are the same. Unless you have anything wildly different, use the middle of the measurements.

  • For width - same as length but do top and bottom. If you have a half height tile detail, ensure that you measure to allow for this.

The working part of a roman blind can only be made as a square/ rectangle so if in doubt, please feel free to submit rough measurements and we can discuss the finer details if you accept your quote.

Please note: you will nearly always have a level of light bleed around a roman blind, and they cannot provide total blackout alone. Please contact us if you are looking for a total blackout solution.
